CREATIVE ARTS

Creativity at Telferscot

At Telferscot, creativity is an essential parof our school vision and values. As well as having dedicated art blocks, we ensure that our curriculum is taught in a creative and inspirational way, while maintaining high standards and challenge to engage interest and a love of learning. Our vibrant curriculum provides children with the opportunity to learn in different ways but to also develop an awareness of creative careers that are on offer in the wider community. We love to use London to its full potential to show our children what is in their local area including galleries and museums as well as inviting family members in to share their creative roles and talents.

Creative Partnerships and Opportunities

We pride ourselves on offering a wide range of creative opportunities that go beyond the National Curriculum. Every year group has a creative partnership that enhances their school experience. These include the following:

Nursery – Year 2 Forest School Sessions: Throughout the school year, groups attend Forest School sessions to develop their independence, confidence and self-esteem through taking part in activities that connect them to nature. During these sessions they will use tools, have campfires, take part in gardening activities and explore Tooting Common. Please see Forest Schools section for more information.

Year 3 Arts and Crafts Sessions: Fortnightly, children are taught to develop their artistic skills and processes to create beautiful artworks. Many of these are displayed around the school or taken home to share with families.

Year 4 Story Seekers Project with The National Theatre and Unicorn Theatre: This project focuses on supporting children to develop their communication and language skills, promoting self-expression and wellbeing. It is designed to help pupils understand the elements and structure of stories and teach key oral story telling skills.

Year 5 Shakespeare Schools Theatre Project: Every year, our Year 5 children prepare and perform versions of Shakespearean plays in local, professional theatres. They immerse themselves in the world of Shakespeare and develop incredible confidence and resilience skills to perform in front of large crowds.

Year 6 School Production: To celebrate all that they have learnt and achieved creatively throughout their time at Telferscot, Year 6 children use their performing skills to put on a theatrical production with its own songs & dances, production team and stage design.

Other Creative Opportunities and Trips

Whole School Festival of Arts and Literature: In the Summer term, we organise our own Festival of Arts to celebrate and encourage a love of books, illustration and storytelling. The children develop their drawing and narrative-writing skills as well as take part in author, illustrator and artist visits with book signings and theatre workshops to inspire and engage.

Theatre Trips: Every child from Nursery to Year 6 will go to watch a theatre show each year.  We have strong links with the Unicorn Theatre, who also offer teacher CPD and resources to bring the learning alive back at school based around the themes of each performance. Children also attend the Polka Theatre for performances and have taken part in their school workshops based around key stories we are learning.

British Film Institute: The BFI provide high quality events on a range of curriculum topics including PSHE, Digital safety and French using films and clips to excite and inspire our children in Key Stage 2. We aim for every child to visit the BFI each year.

LAMDA: We house LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic) exams and support children and their families through the process. LAMDA offer qualifications in communication and performance to inspire children to be confident communicators through the exploration of drama, literature and public speaking. Last year, over 100 children took part with an 100% pass rate, many achieving merits or distinctions.

Nursery – Year 2 Nativity Play: Every year, our youngest children learn a Nativity play and perform it to their families with the songs and dances they have learnt.

Year 1 – 6 Dance: We offer regular dance lessons taught by a professional dancer. The children learn choreographed contemporary moves to an inspiring selection of musical genres.

Young Voices at 02 London: Our Junior Choir members learn a range of songs to perform alongside thousands of other young vocalists, at the annual Young Voices concert. It’s an awe-inspiring experience!

Telferscot’s Got Talent: Our annual event is an opportunity for children to showcase their talents including; singing, dancing, football skills, comedy sketches and magic acts. All children can enter and perform in front of an audience and judges. It is then voted on by the whole school community including families at home.

Lambeth Music Festival at the Southbank Centre: Children who are regular members of Telferscot Infant/Junior Choirs and Strings Club are given the opportunity to perform on stage at the Southbank Centre and Lambeth Assembly Rooms as part of Lambeth Music Festival.

Summer Showcases and Instrumental Concerts: We organise in-school events designed to ‘showcase’ the musical talents of Key Stage 2 children who participate in musical activities at the school. This includes performances by guitar, violin and ‘cello groups, Junior Choir, Samba Club and Strings Club.
