Physical education (pe) at Telferscot

Here at Telferscot, we want all children to be confident sportspeople with good fundamental movement skills and have a positive attitude towards sports. We strive to be the starting block for a lifelong participation in physical activity.

How PE is taught at Telferscot

PE at Telferscot is taught by a specialist company called Transform PE, who are very much onboard with our ethos. Each class have one PE session a week with a specific focus per half term. The skills that are learned are on a 2-year cycle so allow children to consolidate. EYFS have a focus on fundamental movement skills to ensure they are confident and competent movers before transferring into specific sports. The skills are then built on in terms of difficulty and increased competitiveness as they progress through the school, allowing children to apply isolated skills in competitive situations.
We celebrate a year of sports with our annual sports days which is held at Tooting Athletics Track for KS2, Tooting Bec Common for KS1 and the school grounds for EYFS. Swimming is also part of our PE curriculum and we offer this to Years 3, 4 and 5 for an intense block at the local leisure centre’s swimming pool.

How we enhance our children’s experience of PE at Telferscot

In addition to the weekly session, children have lots of other opportunities to get moving. At the start of most school days, children enjoy a workout or mindfulness session to get them in the right frame of mind to learn. At breaktimes and lunchtimes, the children are provided with a box of playground equipment to use which helps to encourage them to run around, join organised games and burn some of their energy!
We have a wide range of after school sports clubs run by school staff, specialist coaches and organisations which are all incredibly popular. We also engage in school-wide initiatives throughout the year themed around physical activity like charity events and celebrate days such as National Fitness Day as another avenue to get the children moving.
We provide the opportunities for children to represent the school in as many competitions as we can. We have teams/children competing in Hockey, Tag Rugby, Football, Swimming and more! Olympians and other elite level athletes, including one of our very own ex pupils, have come into school to run assemblies and workshops to inspire the next generation of sportspeople.
Each year is slightly different in terms of experiences for the children, but the main aim is to provide as many unique opportunities to encourage children to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
